Searching the Web

The Web is a collection of unregulated information. Opinions, theories, disinformation, and facts abound. A little knowledge of history, sources, and critical thinking is essential if you want to come out of it with anything that resembles the "truth".

When you want to find out about anything, look for its equivalent in the "enemy's camp". In other words, if you want information about the CIA, read up on some of the doings of the KGB. We'll lie through our teeth about our own, but dig up every dirty little morsel about "the other guy". - Remember, history is written by the victor.

The easiest way to search for information is by using a search engine's category section. It's also a good idea to use an engine that allows you to jump pages rather than making you click the NEXT link. That way, if the info you're getting isn't relevant to what you're looking for, you can jump up 5 or 10 pages at a time. Also use an engine that allows you to limit your search to a certain time frame. (ex. 3 months if there's way too much information, 1 year if there isn't.) Another good feature is the ability to limit a search to a certain region. -- All these things can be found under Advanced Search, Search Options, or Search Assistant.

If you have a good idea of what you're looking for, go ahead and use keywords to find your info. - Phrases usually have to be enclosed in quotation marks. (ex. "electronic harassment" )

An Alternative to Search Engines & Directories

Those old enough to remember the world before the internet might recall something called Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature. - If surfing the net doesn't leave you with that same sense of certainty you once acquired by humping it to the library and spending the day nodding over periodicals, the following links may be exactly what you're looking for.

(Hopefully after exploring this site, your sense of certainty is not as easily satisfied. -- But anyway, ...)
